The 40th Anniversary GAA-La
On December 1st, 1974, the Vancouver Irish Sporting & Social Club was established when members of the Vancouver Irish community gathered to decide on the name of a new club. It was Pat O’Donohue who proposed the current name, and it was unanimously accepted by all present that night.
Fast Forward through several waves of emigration to Greater Vancouver from Ireland, and we see a club that has embraced the Gaelic Games as the back-bone of a very successful and vibrant club 40 years later.
40th Anniversary GAA-La Event, October 18th, 2014
at UBC Golf Course
On October 18, 2014, the ISSC is hosting our 40th anniversary GAA-LA event at the University of British Columbia Golf Course. The club would now like to extend an open invitation to all former players, members, supporters, and friends to come along and enjoy the celebration as part of the extended ISSC GAA family. It promises to be a night to remember, a night to renew & to rekindle old friendships.
The event is anticipated to sell out on the night. The ISSC would strongly encourage anyone who wants to purchase a ticket to RSVP / contact the undersigned in order to reserve a ticket in advance of the official ticket launch which will coincide with the Western Canadian GAA Championships (see above).
An event like this does take a high level of financial support from our club and our extended sponsors, however ISSC would also now encourage other parties interested in offering some sponsorship for the night to contact us for further details. email@example.com
Capilano Rugby Club
On the August Long Week-end, at Capilano Rugby Club in North Vancouver, the ISSC hosts the Western Canadian GAA Championships at Capilano Rugby Club, in North Vancouver. It will be the largest tournament staged in the history of the Division, and it is expected that there will be 8 Men’s teams, and 5 Ladies teams competing for the Division’s bragging rights.
The tightest Alberta Cup in Ladies Football has just finished, and while the winners were the same, their path to glory was made very difficult with strong displays from Edmonton and Calgary. Reiging Tom Gibbins Western Canada Champions, the Vancouver Harps, will have to be on their game if they are to successfully defend their crown.
In Men’s competition, Edmonton defend their title, intent to prove that they don’t need to be in the City of Champions to win this title. Vancouver will be strong this year, however they know that the hotly contested Alberta Cup will mean, their guests will hit the ground running when they arrive. The Saskatchewan boys will hope to do one better in 2014 and perform on the Senior stage. Also, look out for new local club, the Fraser Valley Gaels who will look to impress on their first Championship sojourn.
With such a large gathering, the ISSC is hosting a festival that runs parallel to the Gaelic Games! Local Irish / Celtic businesses are encouraged to attend and set-up a stall at our event. Please connect with firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested in attending and promoting your business.
