RATTLE THE BOARDS
with LISSA SCHNECKENBURGER
St James Hall (3214 West 10th Ave)
Tickets: $23 ($20 members) (but read below)

Hi Everyone,

We’ve got a great traditional Irish music concert on at the Rogue Folk Club tomorrow and unfortunately, no one is buying tickets!  These are some of the best players in the world and it would be a shame to see them play to an empty hall.  So please, pass this around, buy a ticket, pay what you want, or just show up and we’ll let you in for free!

Here is the info again – thanks for your help in getting the word out!

Keona Hammond
Rogue Folk Club

Playing together since 1992, Rattle the Boards have been praised as one of the best traditional acts in Ireland’s music scene. Pat, John and Benny were all members of the Knocknagow Ceili Band who were based in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary and spent many years playing for dancers throughout Ireland. Benny is also leader of the International supergroup Danu, and has toured all over the world. In 1999 Rattle the Boards released their debut album to much acclaim. With many performances in Ireland and Europe over the past few years they have grown into an act very much sought after. In 2002 Rattle the Boards provided the musical inspiration for a major Irish theatre show called Teac A Bloc by famous visual artist Des Dillon. Rattle the Boards arranged and performed with Teac A Bloc to sold-out venues throughout Ireland and also performed two sketches from the show on Ireland’s premier tv program, “The Late Late Show.”

Last spring they released their long awaited 2nd CD The Parish Platform. Their sense of fun and the lift in the music makes them unique among their contempories. As their name suggests this is a group that will have its audience on their feet and dancing in no time!

Playing since he was 13 years old, Benny McCarthy is one of Ireland’s best young melodeon / button accordion players. His playing is described as powerful and soulful. He comes from Co. Waterford in the sunny south east of Ireland, and founded Danu in 1995.

Pat Ryan (fiddle, mandolin, banjo) comes from a great musical family and has played since he was very young. He first learnt music from his father Jack Ryan who was a notable fiddler with the Knocknagow Ceili Band. His first instrument was the harmonica and now he is accomplished on many instruments . Pat comes from Clonmel in Co. Tipperary.

John Nugent has played guitar since his youth. Like a lot of guitarists he has a strong background in rock and popular music. His love for Irish music began when he met Pat Ryan. John, from Newcastle in Co. Tipperary, has mastered the art of tasteful accompaniment.

John T. Egan (vocals) comes from a musical family and has been singing since he was very young. He has many influences including the Irish greats such as Luke Kelly, Liam Clancy & Christy Moore. John T. is also a keen gaelic sportsman which all adds to his great love of all traditions of Ireland. He also comes from Newcastle, Co. Tipperary.

This concert will also feature a special guest appearance by fiddler / singer Lissa Schneckenburger from Boston. Lissa last played here a couple of years ago, and has a great new CD out since then. She’ll perform the opening set with her excellent trio, playing traditional songs from “the Old Sod” – New England style – and hot original fiddle tunes.

Rattle The Boards and Lissa Schneckenburger play the St James Hall on Thursday, October 8th at 8pm.  Tickets are $23 ($20 for members) and can be purchased at Highlife Records and Rufus’ Guitar Shop, online at www.roguefolk.com or by calling 604.736.3022.  Doors open at 7:30pm.

PRIVATE IRISH AND HIGHLAND GAELIC TUTOR

I am introducing myself to the Celtic community as a native Irish speaker born and reared on the Donegal Gaeltacht of Gweedore. I finished a degree with honours in Celtic Studies and Music at the University of Ulster… doing research and collecting of the endangered folkloric tradition from the homes of coastal Ireland and the Gaelic Hebrides in Scotland.

I currently am undertaking a second higher-level degree in Linguistics at Simon Fraser University, I have taught numerous courses in Ireland on Scottish Gaelic and have devoted my life to teaching music and keeping my native Irish alive.
I am offering private lessons in both the language and mythologies of the Gaelic dialects of Ireland and Scotland for a fee of $30 per session.

It is said in Gaelic: “tír gan teanga, tír gan anam” – A country without a language, a country without a soul.

I can be best reached through e-mail at chat_noir1027@yahoo.ca and I live in the Commercial Drive area. If interested, feel free to contact me.

Rugby in Vancouver

Rugby is a growing sport in BC. There are several clubs in and around Vancouver. Rugby season goes from mid September to December, and then from January to April. This ties in nicely with the end of the Gaelic Football, Hurling and Aussie Rules seasons.

If you want to play rugby in Vancouver, choosing a club will probably come down to how close it is to your work or home, for easy travel to training and to games.

There is a list of rugby clubs in the Vancouver and surrounding areas on the BC Rugby Website.

scribescrestOne men’s club with close ties to the ISSC is Scribes RFC. The Scribes are currently looking for new members, of any level. For the first time in years the Scribes are entering two teams in the local league; a team in the 1st and a team 2nd in the second division.

For ladies wanting to get into the game of rugby, the Rogues RFC have a women’s team. Several ladies from the ISSC also play with the Rogues.
